Garage Extensions
As with all extensions including garage extensions, the local Authorities will
seek to ensure that they will not have a detrimental impact on
neighbouring properties and proposals that are over dominant in
relation to the existing and surrounding properties will not be
approved, particularly in prominent locations.

Many garages may fall within the permitted
development ‘limit’ for private dwellings and, therefore,
do not require planning consent.
If, however, you wish to bring the garage forward of the front main
wall of your house or if you live on a corner plot, you should seek
the advice of your Local Planning Authority. The
Local Planning Authority will seek to ensure that there remains
the ability to accommodate at least one vehicle length of 5 to
6 meters within the cartilage of the property after the construction
of a garage extension.
The proposal should respect the style, shape and architectural
features of the original dwelling and the materials should compliment
the existing dwelling materials.
